Zürich

Every time we visit Zürich, we are impressed by the order and cleanliness of the city. Perhaps it has got to do with the strict law and regulation enforcement - there are no negotiations about offence with the authority. A solo traveller in Zürich, even female, does not have to worry too much about safety.

Zürich is lively in the evening, with lots of art and culture events streaming, especially during the weekend. There are heaps of youngsters in the main train station, dressed just like any young punks in other European cities, but yet, not daring to misbehave. The biggest offence they would probably commit is to litter with their cigarette butts. And when asked for directions by a tourist, it doesn't matter if she was a punk teen, or he was a stern tram driver, they would go out of their way to make sure you find your way.

Some say that Switzerland is very expensive, but with a little bit of planning Zürich could be visited on a budget. Even hotels in Zürich are not too expensive - check Zürich hotels section for latest hotel offers and real-time reservations.

A 24 hours Zürich public transport ticket costs only 7.80 CHF and enables the holder to take unlimited number of bus, tram and boat trips. (Yes, you can cruise the river and the lake with this ticket! But do check before you board a boat, if it's public or private run.)

If you know the right places to eat reasonably priced but good food in Zürich, the city is actually very affordable.

The only thing we found expensive was the train/ bus trip to another city. A return ticket to Amden which is merely 67 km away from Zürich, costs a whopping 50,80 CHF.

As opposed to Rome, Paris or Barcelona, the crowds in Zürich (locals plus tourists) are manageable. So if a pleasant, relaxing tour is what you have in mind, then Zürich is perfect for you, and if you have some extra money, you can always hop on the train and visit Heidi in the mountains ;-)

Zürich travel tips

Water from the fountains is safe to drink, unless otherwise stated. We had the sweetest mountain water from a fountain up in Amden.
