There are a number of restaurants in Portorož ranging from seafood restaurants to Mexican and Italian restaurants as well as pizzerias. Most of the restaurants in Portorož are located along the coastal road and offer dependable food at reasonable prices. One gem that really stands out of the bunch of Portorož seafood restaurants is Ribja kantina.
Ribja kantina
Ribja kantina (literally Fish Canteen) is a simple, local seafood restaurant by the main coastal road (Obala) in the centre of Portorož, just a few steps away from Portorož bus station and main public beach of Portorož. Don't be put off by the inscription "Fresh Fish Food" on the window above the entrance. They do actually serve seafood and it is very good too.
There is no printed menu at Ribja kantina, only a daily menu written on the board in front of the restaurant. The menu changes according to the catch of the day, so you can rest assured that seafood at Ribja kantina is always very fresh.
We ordered grilled anchovies, fried calamari, large mixed salad and a bottle of sparkling water. Both the anchovies and calamari were fresh, tasty and skilfully prepared. Calamari came with a small portion of Tartar sauce. Too small actually, so upon request the friendly waitress (who spoke basic English) happily brought a large extra (free) portion of Tartar sauce for us.
The seafood at Ribja kantina was very tasty and very reasonably priced too. For the abovementioned dishes we paid €19.70.
If you happen to be in Portorož by car and you park at Grand Hotel Metropol garage (one of the most reasonably priced parking garages in Portorož), you can park for free if you eat at Ribja kantina. Get your parking ticket stamped at Ribja kantina restaurant in order to claim your free parking.

Cacao
Cacao, conveniently located just behind the main Portorož public beach, is arguably the best place in Portorož to eat ice-cream. Take a seat at one of their large sofas; enjoy the breeze and the view of the beach and dig into the rich, creamy, sinfully delicious ice-cream. Our favourite is dark chocolate with raspberries and we like 100 % pistachios very much too.
Apart from delicious ice-cream, Cacao serves light snacks such as panini, ice-cream drinks, alcoholic drinks (including sparkling wine), fruit plates, cocktails and warm drinks such as coffee and tea. We were a bit disappointed with their coffee as it certainly wasn't the best brew. But as mentioned before, their ice-cream is unforgettable and not to be missed.
