In terms of natural beauty, Portorož beaches are nothing to shout about. The well developed shores of Portorož are a mix of grass, sand and concrete surfaces and a few wooden piers with stairs and ladders leading into the sea. Swimming is only allowed within well-marked areas and there are life-guards on duty. Many seaside hotels in Portorož have their own private beaches reserved for their own guests, but they do accept external visitors for a fee. However, in order to keep the number of external visitors low, fees to enter some upmarket hotel's beaches can be as high as €35 per day! Nevertheless, the main beach in Portorož is public and free – unless you want to rent an umbrella or a deck chair.
Main public beach of Portorož
Main public beach of Portorož is the largest beach in Portorož with grass, sand and concrete surfaces as well as wooden piers. It stretches about 600 metres from the centre of Portorož towards Grand Hotel Metropol at the eastern side. Entry to the main public beach of Portorož is free. It can get crowded with day-trippers on weekends. There are several bars and cafés along the beach as well as water sports centres renting out water scooters and other water sports equipment. Don't expect to dive or snorkle at the main public beach of Portorož though as there is absolutely nothing to see.
There are deck chairs (€4.50/day) and umbrellas (€4.50/day) available for rent, some with beach safes (umbrella+safe €5.50/day). Daily use of toilets/shower facilities for those who rent deck chairs/umbrellas costs €0.50. If you do not rent a deck chair/umbrella, you need to pay €0.50 per entry.
Important note on beach safes:
It is always a good idea to protect your valuables as thefts at the main
public beach of Portorož do occur. Do not bring any valuables to the beach,
except those you inevitably need. Put them in the safe but be aware that
the safe locking system is rather odd and does not offer as much security
as one would wish for. Namely, the combination of letters/numbers to open
a particular safe is preset and cannot be changed, which means that once
you use a particular safe, you know its combination forever. Not completely
secure indeed.
