Getting to Trieste by air

Trieste Airport (also known as Friuli-Venezia Giulia Airport or Ronchi dei Legionari) is just over 30 km northwest of Trieste. It is a small airport with limited selection of flights. Airlines serving Trieste Airport include Alitalia (flights to Rome, Naples, Catania, Genoa, Milan Linate, Lamezia Terme and Olbia), Belleair (flights to Tirana), Jat Airways (flights to Belgrade), Lufthansa (flights to Munich) and Ryanair (flights to Birmingham, Brussels Chraleroi, Dusseldorf Weeze, Cagliari, London Stansted, Trapani and Valencia).

There is a direct bus (Coach Service 51) from Trieste Airport to Trieste Central Bus Station. Buses run roughly every half an hour from Monday to Saturday and every hour or two on Sundays. The bus journey from Trieste Airport to Trieste Central Bus Station takes almost an hour. The ticket costs €3.30 and is available from the automatic ticket machine in the arrivals hall as well as at the tourist information counter in the arrivals hall of Trieste Airport. From Trieste Central Bus Station there are coach connections to other cities in Italy as well as to Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary.

Getting to Trieste by bus

Trieste Central Bus Station is conveniently located just north of the old town, next to Trieste Central Train Station. Coach connections from Trieste include many destinations in Italy and several international destinations, such as Slovenia (Koper, Izola, Portorož, Piran, Postojna and Ljubljana), Croatia (Poreč, Pula, Umag, Rijeka, Split, Dubrovnik, Zagreb), Serbia (Belgrade), Bulgaria (Sofia), Romania (Bucharest) and Hungary (Budapest). With the exception of Slovenia, the aforementioned bus trips are rather long (i.e. 8 hours to Budapest or 25 hours to Bucharest).

Getting to Trieste by Train

Trieste Central Train Station is located at Piazza della Liberta, very near to the central bus station. Trieste is well connected to Venice (1h38min to 3h30min, at least 1 train per hour), Milan (4-5h, roughly 1 train per hour), Florence (4-5h, roughly 1 train per hour), Rome (6h20min, roughly 1 train per hour) and other Italian cities.

Despite Trieste being so near to Slovenia, there is only one rail connection to Ljubljana per day, which includes a change at Monfalcone and the timing is anything but convenient. You need to leave Trieste at 22:21 and you get to Ljubljana in the middle of the night, at 1:41. In case of the reversed journey, you will need to depart Ljubljana at 2:28, change at Monfalcone and you'll get to Trieste at 6:43 in the morning.
