Matijeva cerkev, Budimpešta

Colourful roof of Mátyás Church, Budapest.

Mátyás Church (Mátyas templom) was first build by king Béla IV in 1255 and reconstructed several times later on. In 1541 the Turks transformed it into a mosque, named it after Suleyman the Magnificent and held festivities celebrating their occupation of Buda in the church, pardon, the mosque.

After the Turks were defeated the church was given to the Jesuits and several rules have been crowned in the church, including Franz Joseph. Despite in the 19th century the church was almost completely rebuilt in neo-gothic style its interior remains exotic with Eastern kind of feel.

The Mátyás Church is currently undergoing a thorough reconstruction which is scheduled to be completed in summer 2012 if no further delays occur. During reconstruction expect parts of the church being behind the scaffolding or closed.
