Kerepesi Cemetery

Kerepesi Cemetery, Budapest

Kerepesi Cemetery, Budapest.

Kerepesi cemetery (Kerepesi temető) is anything but a morbid place. It is a large park behind high concrete fence spreading east from Keleti train station. Shaded by leafy treetops, Kerepesi cemetery is like a huge statue park, perfect for a leisurely stroll.

The cemetery is dotted with hundreds of marvellous tombstones, statues and mausoleums. Many famous Hungarians are buried here, including Lajos Kossuth, Count Lajos Batthyány, Ferenc Deák, János Kádar and Jószef Antal. If you wish to look for a specific tomb, you can get a photocopied map at the entrance to the cemetery, on which all important tombs are clearly marked. Or you can just browse the cemetery randomly, strolling past the beautiful statues in memory of musicians, painters, poets, writers, actors, farmers, shepherds and Communist revolutionaries who found their final peace at Kerepesi cemetery.

Location: Pest VII, Fiumei út 16. Transport: metro M2 (Keleti pályaudvar).
