Notre Dame Cathedral, also known as Notre Dame de Paris, is located on Ile de la Cité, an island on Seine River in central Paris. Construction of the cathedral took a very long time and lasted from the 12th to 14th century.
Notre Dame Cathedral is an outstanding achievement of Gothic architecture characterised by exceptionally well-balanced combination of towers, statues, rosettes and massive portals. There are several parts of Notre Dame Cathedral open for visitors: the main interior of the cathedral, the crypt and even its tower. If you would like to visit all of them, count on spending a very long time in queues. The latter sometimes extend to unimagined distances. There seems to be a minimum 1 hour wait to visit the tower of Notre Dame Cathedral in summer.
In terms of exterior, the most interesting is the west façade of Notre Dame Cathedral. If you are into photography and would like to make stunning photos of the west façade, get there in the afternoon, preferably just before sunset, when the west façade of Notre Dame Cathedral bathes in soft light of the setting sun.
