Starata kashta
Restaurant Starata kashta is in the new part of Veliko Tarnovo, so if you are staying in the old part, you will have to take a long walk (or a bus or a taxi if that's what you prefer).
It is well worth the trip, the food in Starata kashta is excellent. We ate there four times, because we simply didn't believe that we could have found anything better in Veliko Tarnovo, especially after we had a dinner in restaurant Gurko (inside hotel Gurko), which was only so-so.
Starata kashta was a perfect place for roasted lamb lovers like us. On our first evening the meat was so fresh that even the fat (which we normally wouldn't eat) tasted heavenly. We couldn't help ourselves not eating all of it.
Other dishes such as baked potato and cold roasted peppers with yogurt sauce and herbs were very tasty as well.
Starata kashta was the place where we drank an excellent Bulgarian wine, Merlot from Stambolovo, vintage 1998.
We always sat in a nice garden covered by climbing plants providing pleasant shade during daytime.
Substantial meals in Starata kashta cost 27-36 leva for two, including a bottle of wine.
