Koprivshtitsa restaurants

Koprivshtitsa, Bulgaria

Koprivshtitsa.

In Koprivshtitsa we were greeted by rain. Koprivshtitsa train station we arrived at is out of town, so we took a local bus to Koprivshtitca bus station nearer to the centre of the village. We didn't feel like searching for accommodation in the rain, so we entered the restaurant Pod starata krusha, right there at the bus station. We didn't expect to get remarkable food; bus station restaurants are not famous for culinary delights after all. However, we were pleasantly surprised. Fried potatoes we ordered were so good that we decided to come back for dinner.

Pod starata krusha

Restaurant Pod starata krusha (Under the old pear tree) at Koprivshtitsa bus station doesn't promise a lot when looking at it from the outside. The interior however is pleasant, it looks like an old farmhouse, with a lot of dark wood and an open fireplace, which they actually lighted up – it's been unusually cold for the 7th of June.

When we visited almost all the tables were occupied and all the guests were locals. Pod starata krusha looked like a popular place promising fresh local fare.

We ordered 3 kebabches, fried potatoes with grated cheese and lutenica (spicy local sauce made of peppers). Kebabches were very big and tasty, the grated cheese sprinkled over the potatoes home-made and lutenica excellent, just spicy enough. Encouraged by the quality of the dishes we also ordered a trout, which was fresh and skilfully prepared.

We almost couldn't believe to get such a good quality food at the bus station restaurant which we decided to check out only because we've been caught in the rain. In normal circumstances we would have probably just dashed past it.

The prices in the restaurant Pod starata krusha were very reasonable. The dishes mentioned above plus a glass of house wine, a beer and a Bulgarian cognac Bourgas 63 set us back for 17 leva.
