The amount of travel photography gear depends on how serious you are with this hobby. It can range from a pocket-size point-and-shoot digital camera to professional photo bag weighing several kilos.
If you are a point-and-shoot photographer, you only need to bring your camera, a charger (or spare batteries) and enough films/memory cards in case you are heading to places where it might be difficult to stock up. A small, light tripod might be useful in order to be able to take photos in low light conditions.
If you are using a SLR camera with interchangeable lenses, you will certainly need to bring more equipment in order for your photos to stand out of the point-and-shoot standard.
Minimum travel photography gear of a serious amateur photographer would include the following:
- camera body
- wide-angle zoom lens with a lens hood (covering at least 28mm, possibly
less at the wide angle end in order to be able to make stunning landscape
and architecture shots)
- telephoto zoom lens with a lens hood (such as 100-300mm, for shooting
distant details and unobtrusive portrait photography)
- powerful flash
- sturdy tripod
- remote shutter release
- skylight/UV filters mounted permanently on all lenses. Skylight filter
not only contributes to better quality photographs but also protects lenses
from physical impact - it's much cheaper to buy a new skylight filter
than a new lens
- polarizing filter
- spare batteries for camera body and flash
- film/memory card supplies
- good quality cloth for cleaning lenses
